2025-26 Legislative Term Social: A Conversation with Senator Brian Jones

Senator Brian W. Jones represents California’s 40th District, which covers much of San Diego County, a diverse region with a large Hispanic/Latino population and industries tied to healthcare, technology, tourism, and the military. A Republican with a background in local and state politics, Jones has served in the legislature since 2002, focusing on lowering the cost of living, addressing homelessness, and improving education. His district is politically competitive, with nearly even Democratic and Republican registration, making his emphasis on economic relief and public safety central to his legislative agenda.

Our Conversation:

Q: Based on the issues your constituents care about, what bill proposal ideas do you have?

A: Increase incentives to become a teacher. As you know, our education system has been declining for [quite] a while now. I’m thinking, increasing incentives to become a teacher, and that way, if we pay them more, we can raise the requirements to be a teacher. If [they get] a raise, we can get better quality teachers; teachers who are actually passionate, because there are some teachers who don’t care about their students. And they always use that one excuse: “I don't get paid enough to do this.” Another one I have is to increase the tax benefits [for] legalized married couples. That would include both straight couples, gay couples, and whatever your gender is, your sexual orientation is, as long as you are married.

Q: Would you be open to collaborating with other senators or lobbyists on bills? And if so, who?

A: I'm good with collaborating with just about anybody, so long as I feel like my constituents are looked out for and that they get the attention they deserve.

Q: Seeing as you're in the minority, do you think that might be a challenge?

A: I don’t think so. I am willing to make compromises so long as my constituents are benefited in some way, shape, or form.

Q: Do you plan to run for any leadership positions today? If so, what?

A: Minority leader.

Q: What do you hope to achieve by the end of your term?

A: Hopefully get my bills passed or pass bills that can help my constituents.

Q: Is there anything else you’d like the people of District 40 to know?

A: Honestly? Just place your trust in me. I have your back, I’ll do everything in my power to help you guys out.

Senator Brian Jones remains committed to addressing the rising cost of living, homelessness, and education challenges facing his district. As a long-time Republican legislator representing a politically competitive region, his focus on practical economic relief and community well-being will continue to shape his work in the State Senate.
